ere's the thing about yoga - it's meant to make our lives better. For most of us, it's not meant to become the be-all and end-all, it's meant to help us to be better people every day, people who are more connected to our own spirits, to our communities and to the people around us, people who can live more consciously. It's not so much about what happens on that mat as it is about what we take off the mat with us.
I believe that yoga is for everyone. I think that it's very easy to assume that yoga isn't for us or that we don't fit into the yoga box, especially since the business of yoga has become more commercial and we see more and more images of bendy young women and incredibly strong young men turning upside down while wearing very expensive stretchy gear. We can't let that commercial hype put us off - so all the cool kids are doing yoga these days; I think that's fantastic! It is utterly awesome that a practice that helps people to become calmer, more focused, more tolerant and more self aware is considered a cool thing to do.
But maybe you don't think of yourself as a cool kid. Maybe you're someone else entirely. Or maybe you were a cool kid a long time ago. Well I want to assure you that yoga is for you. Yoga is for everyone. It's a practice for life that can help us to negotiate and enjoy each stage a little better.
In my view yoga is a beautiful gift that keeps giving as long as we keep turning up on the mat. Sometimes it's hard to do that but I can't think of an instance when I regretted practising yoga or felt that I had wasted my time by taking a class. Yoga always gives more than we go looking for!
And just a side note: you are absolutely welcome to practice with me if you think it will make you cooler. Or if you want to become more flexible, or stronger, or calmer, or if you're pretty cool already, or if you're just coming to hang out with your friend who was the one who really wanted to come to the class. I do not mind what brings you to yoga. I'm simply thrilled that you're doing yoga and that this beautiful practice is taking root within you. I hope that you'll practice throughout your life and that your practice of yoga will help to ensure that you get the very most out of your time on this planet.
